I miss it so very badly. There’s no way in hell I won’t own another one.

I miss my SX4

I’m thinking of replacing my wife’s 2011 Elantra with another manual Awd. Here in Canada I should be able to find up to 2013s, the year they left. I’ll let her take the pathfinder.

I always found that the sx4 reminded me of those AWD tercels, except you know newer, heavier, faster, better...... When I started driving in 95, I so wanted a awd civic wagon.....

I own an ‘89 Camry and a 91 Corolla Base Model. The Golden Age of Toyota. Best cars I’ve ever owned.

Hey - I was just doing a Tercel search and saw this. There’s one for sale a couple hours from me. I don’t have any info yet besides “runs good” “needs some TLC” and that it’s a manual with less than 200k on it. If I ask for more info, is there anything specific I should be concerned about besides rust? Can I pester you about these more if it sounds like something I should check out? I'm going to see if I can get more pics and figure out what TLC it needs (the one available photo looks relatively rust free but a couple minor dents). Thanks in advance!

Sure! It’s the only car I know anything about really! And still the best car ever.

I mean, the rust thing is the primary issue. Don’t be afraid to crawl under one and have a better look. Look especially at the bottom of the hatch and corners on the interior doors. That being said, I drove a rusty one for two years, and it’s had two owners since then — rust is merely a feature on these cars! Can’t complain about 4WD on demand and 30mpgs!

When you test drive one, make sure to test the 4WD in EL (extra low gear — it’s a granny gear for 4WD). You don’t want to touch one that has any transmission issue.

I bought two that needed TLC — one from a guy I trusted and one from a stranger. Guess who I bought the one above from.

I was going to ask about the 4WD. Kind of a dumb question, but I’ve never driven a vehicle with real 4wd...when it’s switched on, is it obvious if it’s working? And if TLC includes the clutch, how bad will that be? I can't fix that myself but if I could get it home it might be cheap enough to be worth it anyway.

Testing 4WD is easy. There will be a 4WD little light that illuminates on your cluster of buttons and gauges. You will feel a distinct, satisfying mechanical *click* I recommend testing it on some wet grass or ice. It’s like night and day.

I paid for a clutch on the other Tercel — I think it ran me 800 or so bucks. If everything else about the car was wonderful, I say go for it. But if it’s just one of many issues, even little ones (which add up very quickly — VERY quickly if you’re not handy), it’s a really hefty bill for a car that probably won’t command $2,000 value in its current state. But with miles that low (low for a Tercel anyway), it is tempting.

Thank you again. Not handy, but hoping to learn more than I know. I’ve been looking for something small and affordable that can handle dirt better than my daily for camping, hiking, and biking. So the good thing is, it doesn’t have to work all the time, but I’d prefer it not to leave me stranded when it does!
